> DSL Faq &
Information
Q.
What is DSL?
A. DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It’s a proven technology that
provides Internet access that is many times faster than “traditional”
dial-up connections. DSL uses existing copper wires (From the telephone
system) to provide you with dedicated (Always Connected) Internet service.
Q.
Can I get DSL at home or is it only a business facility
A. Yes, you can have this service in your home. It is also available to
businesses small and large
Q.
How much does DSL cost?
A. Not much more than your dial up subscription but there are additional
benefits that mean the real cost is very little more.
Q.
What do I need to sign up?
A. First you do have to be in a geographic area that can be served by LPM .
In and near major towns you are probably OK. In outlying rural areas it is
unlikely. We can check for you using your telephone number.
Q.
Do I need a new computer or any special equipment?
A. Your existing computer, if it is less than two years old, can probably
take advantage of the higher speeds. You will need a new modem plus an
Ethernet card. Businesses with a network will probably need a router
instead.
Q.
Do I have to pay the phone company any install charges or monthly fee? Can I
do it all through you?
A. You can do everything through LPM. We will set you up through your
existing phone service. There is one set up charge payable to LPM
Q.
Do I have to change my existing internet subscriber and e-mail address?
A. If you are already an LPM client it will all be seamless. The difference
will be much faster access and a little more per month.
If
you are with another ISP you will need to sign up separately or change to
LPM internet service.
Q. Are there any extra benefits?
A. The higher speed of course for Gaming; Music and MP3 downloads; Video and
streaming media ; Plus you get a special feature of DSL that allows you to
receive phone calls while you are surfing on line.
Q.
Are their even higher speeds associated with DSL?
A. Yes. The basic service described here for residential customers is 512K,
almost ten times faster than 56K dial-up. Other higher speeds and options
are available at higher cost.
